What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?Generally, psychotherapy is a longer-term talk therapy which works with the root cause of your difficulties. It deals with unconscious material that can be driving our thoughts and behaviour. Counselling is often shorter-term, using conscious thoughts to deal with current issues. You'll see these terms used interchangeably which is quite normal in this world. What's important is you find someone who works in a way that aligns with what you want.

How does it work?!The million dollar question! Different therapists will work in different ways. For me, I believe that nurturing, consistent, non-judgemental relationship is what humans need to grow and develop. So my first priority will be providing this for you. Over time, as more safety grows between us, we may start to notice patterns, identifying the heart of what's going on. Our relationship is a space where you can explore parts of yourself in depth. It's not the same as a 'normal' relationship where you have to balance the needs between two people. I am here, for you. I see therapy as a place where you can play with new ideas, test out new ways of being safely, before you take these out into your wider life. There is so much I could write here about how therapy works - it's not a simple one-dimensional process. Feel free to ask me more if we speak.

What if I don't really know what I want to talk about? That's ok! That's how I started therapy too. If you have a sense that something isn't right and you're not feeling how you want to - that's enough. Just come with that and I can support you to work out what you might like to talk about. I'll always make sure you're happy to discuss certain topics before we start to open them up.

How many sessions will I need? The answer to this is different for everyone because people come to therapy for different reasons. Some difficulties can be resolved in a few weeks, whereas others benefit from therapy over multiple years. I would love to be able to offer you a magic wand to fix all your problems quickly! But the reality is, when we've been living in a certain way for many years, it takes time to change. You might have a few sessions with me and decide I'm not the right therapist for you. This is absolutely fine and I'd encourage you to let me know so that you can find someone who is a better fit.

Do I have to come weekly? To begin with, yes. Not for my benefit, but for yours. To get what you want from therapy, we need to build a good working relationship and I find the momentum just isn't there less than weekly. If we choose to work together, we will have a weekly slot that's yours every week. This helps provide consistency and regularity. Later down the line, some clients who have made lots of development may choose to drop down to fortnightly sessions - we can discuss this when we get there.
-
Do you provide online sessions?Yes. I offer therapy over zoom as well as in-person, please detail this when you get in touch. Duration and fees are the same as in-person sessions.
-
What happens next if I enquire?Once I have received your enquiry, I will get back to you within 2 working days. We'll set up a 15 minute no-obligation phone call where you can tell me a bit more about your circumstances and hear whether you like the sound of me. If we feel we are a good fit to work together, we'll book our first 60 minute session. In the first session we'll go through some paperwork, I'll tell you a bit more about how I work and I'll ask you more questions about your background and difficulties. From here we can decide how we'd like to move forward, usually agreeing a regular slot.
